A working mother of two young boys, personal banker Lauryn Schmitt strategically planned a week-long family vacation to Walt Disney World last month, when she knew schools were scheduled to be closed for Spring Break.
But when the Oklahoma teacher walkout hit a little more than a week later, Schmitt — like thousands of Oklahoma parents — was at a loss for what to do for child care.
The home daycare that keeps Schmitt's 1-year-old son isn't licensed to watch additional children. Meanwhile, Piedmont Public Schools, where her 4-year-old son Logan attends preschool and aftercare, is among the schools that, as of Wednesday, have been closed eight consecutive weekdays...
